Memorial Day Weekend is here! Summer 2016 is about to begin and and many of you in Ohio are packing up to travel and getting ready to celebrate.  Holiday weekends are the most dangerous in terms of impaired driving in the United States and sadly there is a huge increase in alcohol related arrests, accidents and injuries. Furthermore, the time period between Memorial Day and Labor Day is a time when most students are home on summer vacation and it is known as “The 100 Deadliest Days” for teens and young adults on US highways.

Obviously, it should go without saying, but in an effort to prevent high statistics, law enforcement will be beefed up this weekend. They will have more officers paroling local, state and federal property and you can bet there will be DUI Checkpoints this weekend and throughout the summer months.

Beware of their increased presence and know that you have rights. Often times, law enforcement will perform unlawful stops or searches trying to make a positive impact on the public.  If you are planning to go out make sure you have a designated driver or the uber app if you will be drinking. Even if you drink, but stay well within your limits, you could end up with a DUI if you are pulled over. Even the innocent can be made to look guilty if too much is said during an arrest.  Law enforcement at a car window can make anyone nervous, guilty or not. When a person is frantic, explanations become jumbled and confused and too much is said, a lot of information is exposed that will probably make the situation worse.  Remain calm, quiet and call your criminal defense attorney.

The Bottom Line:  Keep my number in your phone. If you find yourself in any situation at all, your best bet is to call an experienced criminal defense attorney.   I will be the one person that will stand up for you and fight against any odds that are stacked against you – even if everyone is calling you guilty and you are innocent.  Our criminal justice system is not perfect. Law enforcement make mistakes and grand juries indict bad cases. When honest police officers are doing their best to objectively investigate crime they can’t prevent bad actors from levying false accusations for some ulterior motive.
